International Transport Spedition
Adam Michalczewski

Adam Michalczewski’s company was established in 1973. The beginnings of business activity were very difficult mainly due to the political system, which effectively blocked the development of private enterprise. The everyday life poses next challenge, but the company owner’s characteristics, typical of a man of action, predisposed him to permanent work and overcoming barriers. In the early period of the company development, oriented exclusively at goods transport, its range of activity was only domestic. In 1989, “International Transport Spedition Adam Michalczewski Company” started rendering international transport services and opened the International Freight Forwarding division. Fast development of market economy in Poland led, on the one hand, to the elimination of key barriers which directly affected possibilities of the development of private companies, and on the other hand, forced the company to put much greater effort and choose an appropriate strategy of the company development.

In 1994, the company started rendering services within the area of regular public transport in Radom. Adam Michalczewski became a precursor of private passenger transport in Poland. In 2003, ITS A. Michalczewski opened its Warsaw branch and started rendering services within the area of regular public transport in Warsaw.

A considerable experience in running such a business in Radom was very helpful and resulted in an effective opening of a new branch of the company.

The analysis of costs and their optimization represents an indispensable task of every manager working within market economy and running a success-oriented, modern company. Therefore, ITS Company cannot afford to have e.g. overstaffing, ineffective actions undertaken by our employees or a cooperation with dishonest suppliers. Thanks to a thorough analysis, the company may chart new directions and specifically determine means allowing it to increase management efficiency through the rational use of all factors and a consequent reduction of prime costs.

Currently, ITS ADAM MICHALCZEWSKI employs over 460 employees. A policy of staff stabilization, which had been run for long years, led to the situation that currently an average employment period at the Company is 12 years (not taking into account the Warsaw branch as it has been operating only for a short time). The result of such a policy is high efficiency of ITS employees and a small proportion of employees per a means of transport. The company is identified mostly by means of a distinguishing marking of our vehicles as well as our own website, unification of clothing worn by our employees when at work, sponsoring motor sports, loaning means of transport for different, non-commercial events.

At the time, the company has got 150 buses operating public transport in Warsaw and Radom, and 20 lorries handling international transport.

However, the beginnings were difficult. In the early years of the company’s activity, unavailability of new vehicles and a lack of advantageous possibilities of financing investments forced us to make purchases on the secondary market. First heavy goods vehicles used in “Michalczewski” Company were Jelcz, Liaz, Mercedes and Man lorries. And the first public buses were MAN SL 200, powered by propane-butane mixture. Those vehicles came from the early eighties, were factory-adapted to be powered by LPG, and transferred from Vienna. Most of those buses were used by ITS in Radom for over four years. However, quite high operation costs which comprised many factors such as necessary gas cylinder technical inspections, special requirements as for service infrastructure and a high price of spare parts and their unavailability forced us to change our fleet. The replacement process started in 1996 with a purchase of Ikarus 260 and 280 buses and in 1998 the company purchased first brand new, low-floor MAN buses. Currently, the majority of our fleet are brand new MAN vehicles. These are among others MAN buses of the following types: NL 222, NL 223, NG 313, tractor units 19.414 – 19.464, 18.410 – 18.510 and KRONE and SCHMITZ trailers. ITS Company proves it is a trustworthy partner which counts on the high quality of services rendered.

Currently, analyses are being conducted regarding the use of natural gas as an alternative and, at the same time, cheaper source of vehicle power. All advantages and disadvantages to the use of this type of fuel are being thoroughly considered. The advantages are, above all, the conformity to the highest fume purity standards and a lower price of fuel directly affecting the operation costs. The main disadvantages are considerably higher bus purchase price, very high outlays connected with building own CNG petrol station and a small range of buses. At the same time, currently it is hard to calculate a total cost of periodic technical services of CNG powered vehicles.

The company’s permanent development and its range and size predisposes it to be one of the biggest and most modern private transport companies in Poland.
